Recently, women on Facebook were asked to post the color of their bra in their status updates -- a show of support for Breast Cancer Awareness. The source of that viral campaign is still unknown, but it caught on, became a huge success, and swept across the site within hours.
At first, I had know idea why my female friends were posting colors on their Facebook status'. Maybe it was Color Day. Maybe it was some strange Facebook ritual I was not privy to. I had no idea. So I joined in, and started posting random colors as well. It seemed like the thing to do. However, when I discovered the true nature and intent of those colors, I was impressed. Something simple and fun had suddenly taken on a greater meaning. And it had gotten people thinking, thinking about breast health issues, and the ongoing fight against breast cancer affecting so many women worldwide.
I was inspired. And for me, inspiration is a powerful thing. As an artist, inspiration can lead to great ideas, which in turn can lead to the passion to create, improve.... and/or make a difference in the lives of others.
And that's when the idea hit me. Something as simple as the color of a woman's bra, had become a movement... a cause. But why should that cause be restricted to a word posted on Facebook? That didn't seem productive enough. How could a color itself make a tangible difference in the fight against breast cancer?
Well, as it just so happens, in real life, I design t-shirts. And I design them with messages, sayings, and designs that express something about the person wearing them. What if that "post your bra color as your Facebook status" concept became a t-shirt concept encouraging others to think more provocatively about breast health? What if women could take the color of their bra, wear it in public, and share the cause in their daily life? Wouldn't that make a bigger statement?
I thought so.
So, I set about designing a line of t-shirts featuring those bra colors, and I'm inviting women of all ages to wear one in public. I've started my own Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, and you can be part of it.
Take a moment, and check out my BCA t-shirts. Select one featuring YOUR bra color, and boldly wear it in public -- wherever you go. 20% of the cost of each shirt will be donated straight to the fight against Breast Cancer (aka, Susan G. Komen for the Cure). The remaining profit will go directly to another cause -- helping to fund a young woman's wedding!
See, in July of 2010, I will be marrying my fiancee -- Kelli. We're very devoted to each other, and living a love story beyond anything we could have imagined. Unfortuantely, we're also finding it a challenge to raise the necessary funds to host the simple wedding we've been dreaming of.
So, since I love color and design t-shirts for a living, and Kelli has a history of breast cancer in her family, marrying the two stories together into the "Color Of My Bra" Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign seemed like a good idea. It made practical sense.
If YOU would like to be involved in this campaign:
Become a fan of the official "Color Of My Bra" page on Facebook.
Then, pick out your bra color t-shirt and wear it in your neighborhood. 20% of the cost of each shirt will be donated to the fight against Breast Cancer. The remaining profit will help pay for our wedding.

PLEASE NOTE: Cafepress prints my BCA T-Shirts, so, after all costs due them for printing and labor, Kelli and I are also left with about 20% profit.
